Theatre and homosexualityTeatro y homosexualidad

«Since I was in middle school I liked the theatre and I always did female roles. In high school also belonged to a theatre group. So I thought maybe I could become an actress» – Kawabata, «Naturally»

The current is gay, no doubt, and even more in the performing arts.

In the monotheistic cultures, homosexuals have always been condemned to secrecy and shame, and therefore to the sordid, if not the gallows or the stake. In his cinematic recreation of the «Canterbury Tales» by Chaucer, Pasolini holds a personal interpretation and reworking of the story of two sodomites summoner when unable, for lack of potential, to buy the will of the ecclesiastical judge, extortioner, are burned in a large cloister, surrounded by a dramatic silence before the look of his countrymen. In the West, and only in the West have improved greatly in this respect, it is clear, but then to say that the homosexual issue has been resolved, half long way.

Some societies-pagan, of course, have been fit to homosexual, from the Siberian tribes where the shaman for his deviant personality and his special sensitivity, and female breasts painted on his chest, is better able to communicate and evoke arcane and hidden worlds, to Japan where theater Ka-bu-zi figure confirms the onnagata, actor who plays female roles ever and the existence of all-not just the theatrical one lives permanently in women, a clear example of dedication absolutely vital, not just part-time to art.

Yes, but Japan, although increasingly westernized since the Meiji era, is quite far away and exotic, really.

West is another story. Yet always, the percentage of homosexuals in the arts (ballet, theater and Hogan movie) is triggered, no doubt, with respect to other activities. In a very curious and unusual interview, the ex-boxer Mike Tyson says: «My dream is to become an actor. Yes, I want to do theatre. I may be a dreamer, but I think I can. Being someone who I can not be in the real world, I feel free. » Unexpected, surprising, especially for what concerns us here, revealing words. Return later to them.

Until the twentieth century, the theatre will stage explicit situations, openly gay, but like the dream as dream phenomenon exposes hidden and repressed feelings and desires satisfied unmentionable, through its symbolic and cryptic language to overcome the dream-censorship, performing arts will also give free rein, in an equally devious and impervious to social morality, the homosexual impulses, not only players but also spectators. The most glaring example is the ladybug character (I, actor, I’m not, what is the role I have to interpret and, secondly, I did not write), which raises at least the smile of the respectable (unconsciously I, the viewer, I recognize myself in something or in large part in it, but to laugh at him, I feel safe and safeguarded my heterosexuality). For example, Mezzetin, that raised evolved from the Commedia dell’Arte, uninhibitedly display, its very hit and more than suspicious ways, without any danger for those who embody and to whom, from outside, enjoy your mannered affectations. In the same context must be understood the destrozonas carnival, that so torn Solana portrayed in his paintings. Yes, true, true viragos recreate, but I, man, I dressed as a woman and somehow I have changed sex, without this I can be accused of being bitter shell as I have always shown genuine ways male, if not pure male. And that longing is satisfied anxiogenic prohibited and not only anxiety but also avoiding innocently enjoying, at the same time respecting and maintaining socio-sexual and psychological balance.

The taboo of homosexuality is addressed in passing and in a surreptitious and devious (and unconscious), very smart, in the Commedia dell ‘Arte, in line with the mess that compels the characters to cross-dress, that is to take the clothesbe the opposite sex and go through what is not. Example: Flavio and Isabella Isabella loves loves Flavio, this is classic, but their love is hindered by the selfishness of old, this is classic too, and thus to overcome the obstacles, Flavio innamorato is dressed as a woman and the innamorata Isabella as a man, but nobody knows the lure of the other. At one point they encounter. The adama Flavio feel an irresistible attraction to another man! And the same, but in the opposite direction, this is at least puzzling, the ambiguity and ambivalence as well as poetry are penetrated. Everything is clear then, certainly, but it has accomplished largely fictitious, the «gay utopia» in the words of the master Antonio Fava. In addition, the viewer vicariously, he also lived his own homosexual experience. Furthermore, «The Taming of the Shrew» by Shakespeare, the brave woman eventually bow the neck, also in «The Merchant of Venice», the Jew will be punished in the end, but in the first case, there lived a social and psychic, unpublished of female independence and in the second case will have to uphold the dignity and humanity of the universal and eternally reviled. Again, at the end of the work, to impose oppressive reality, certainly, but no-one can take away what they’ve lived.

Returning to friend Tyson, who as another one feels free. Since the homosexual can not, at least openly, so in ordinary social life in the theater, however, for the simple fact that it plays another, a character, he allows, and is allowed to be non-or rather it be what is not allowed to be, that is playing so-and-so, though whether of the same sex, is largely true, and another, that «other» which is itself in its dimension homosexual.

This is, in my opinion and if I have not been too abstruse, the reason why the theatre attracts the homosexual and there is, among actors and actresses, such a high number of sexual inversion.
